Madeline Island is the largest of the 22 islands forming Lake Superior's Apostle Islands archipelago. Emerging from the lake off the coast of northern Wisconsin's Bayfield peninsula, Madeline has held great importance for over 400 years to Native Americans, French fur traders and voyageurs, missionaries, summer guests and today, 250 or so year-round residents.
